Starting a Painting

by Vicki Watson in Miscellaneous

I have nearly finished a painting of roses and a friend on viewing the painting said, “how do you start, I mean how do you draw the roses”. When we start our painting sure we can splash paint about, but we also need to be able to draw.
There are many aids to help you to draw. Developing a grid, tracing, projecting the image onto the canvas, but I do believe you need to learn how to draw to make your art “yours” and alive. And the old saying, practice makes perfect is certainly true.

I carry a little a5 notebook in my bag with a fine tip sharpie and draw whatever I see. Over the summer break I was sitting out on my deck and thought what will I draw and looked down at my feet.  Anything will do to practice your drawing.
